REVIEW: thisquietarmy – Hex Mountains

thisquietarmy is the experimental guitar-based project of Eric Quach from Montreal, Quebec, Canada – active since 2005. Originally a one man band, the new album enlists the help of drummer Scotty Rooney (Alaskan), bassist Dorian Williamson (Northumbria/Adoran) and vocalists Émilie Bresson & Jeanne Peluard (Monarch) to add fresh elements to TQA’s sound: thundering drums, thick foggy bass and witch-like shrieks, while retaining thisquietarmy’s signature drone-based soundscapes.

This is quite an album. It is refreshing to say the least.

It is both ambient and heavy, reaching both ends of the spectrum and is not too dissimilar to a mix of Angelo Badalamenti meets God Speed! You Black Emperor but with their signature drone sound, it is the perfect recipe.
Inspired by his travels this project itself is somewhat an epic journey, the music could serve as a soundtrack to a winter evening with candles to light your way or a midnight road trip, winding your way around deserted roads in the middle of nowhere. It is atmospheric and will certainly put chills down your spine from the very first track. Impressive stuff!
