Gig Review: The Cult – Brixton Academy 2016

There was something rather magical in the air. Not only were we in the birthplace of The Cult tonight but it was a fitting tribute to the late David Bowie, of whom the band would be paying tribute to throughout the evening. From his parting gift Blackstar to Moonage Daydream as part of their encore – this was a very special night indeed.
Opening with a new track “Dark Energy” followed by the immortal “Rain”, foot stomping “Wild Flower” and “Horse Nation”, a seamless set list like this proved how the band never lost their groove.

Astbury is on top form, looking lean as one of the last great frontmen. Tambourines get smashed, there is talk of politics and even the owners of Brixton Academy get called out for not paying the heating bill. He isn’t shy with words.

Billy Duffy throws the flamboyant shapes and of course delivers the riffs and solos. The sight of his Gretsch White Falcon ushers in She Sells Sanctuary which of course arouses the interests of those who came to just play with their phones.

A pummeling Love Removal Machine ends the night and what a night it was.
