Blood and Tears: The Art of Jasmine Worth

Jasmine Worth is an artist who lives in San Diego. Her love for all things dark and surreal are very obvious in her beautiful work depicting religious figures such as the Virgin Mary. She has featured in many exhibitions and is currently featured in Paul Booth’s Last Rites Gallery. We managed to ask Jasmine a few questions about her work.

Can you tell me a bit about how you discovered your creative side as an artist?

I think my creativity stems from many different influences in my life. I’ve been drawing and painting from a very young age, and my early art was influenced by cartoons and Brian Froud. As I matured my creativity was stimulated by everything from the occult, to feminism, to environmental issues, to Terry Gilliam films, really all over the place and sort of an amalgamation of everything I find compelling in life.

Throughout your creative endeavours – who or what has influenced and inspired your work?

I love the pre-Raphaelites, the surrealists, feminist literature, occult symbolism, nature. Contemporary artists that I look to obsessively are Nicola Samori, Odd Nerdrum, Dan Quintana and Christian Rex Van Minnen, I love their work.

Your work has a dark and surreal look to it with very strong religious imagery, particularly the nuns. Tell me more about this.

I use the image of the Virgin Mary in a modern context way to describe the suffering and exploitation of humanity and the environment and the hands of patriarchy and materialism. I see it as a way of reclaiming the goddess imagery that was stolen and exploited along with the earth.

You have a solo exhibition at Paul Booth’s legendary Last Rites Gallery – how did that come about?

Yes, I’ve been showing at Last Rites Gallery for several years now. I honestly can’t remember how that first came about, but Paul is a really great guy and he’s wonderful to work with.

Apart from art, what else do you like to do with your time?

I like to read, walk in nature, go to the beach, then read some more.

Tell me one random thing about you.

I have insomnia and watching Murder, She Wrote is one of the few things that helps me to sleep.
